She-Shed Considerations: Space, Purposes, Exterior Finishing

Just like men, many women need some time and space to themselves every now and then. And while some men have the man cave for this purpose, a growing alternative for women with similar needs is the she-shed.

At A-Shed USA, we’ve spent years providing Salt Lake City and other nearby clients with all their custom storage shed, garage and related building needs. We’ve assisted numerous women and families with she-shed needs, whether you’re ordering a brand new shed for this purpose or converting a prior shed. What are some of the top themes we recommend to clients as they move forward with she-shed design, setup and organization? This two-part blog series will go over several.

Consider Space and Surroundings

Especially if you’re ordering a brand new shed for the purpose of a she-shed, you’ll want to consider both the surrounding yard and the size of the shed itself. For example, if you have a large yard with plenty of room to spare, you might go for a larger shed that can accommodate things like comfortable chairs, a small table, decor and more.

If your yard is on the smaller side or you plan to place the shed close to your house, a smaller shed might suffice. Or, you might want to consider a design that allows for some type of outdoor seating area or porch attached to the she-shed itself.

Defining Purpose and Uses

Once you’ve considered the space and surroundings, you’ll want to start thinking about what exactly you hope to accomplish with your she-shed. Do you want a place to read and relax? A spot for working on crafts or small projects? A home office away from the main house? All of the above?

Part of the reason why she-sheds are becoming so popular is because they offer a versatile space that can be used for just about anything. But it’s still helpful to have a general idea of what you’ll be using the shed for as you move forward with design, decor and organization.

Think About Exterior Finishing

While what’s happening inside the she-shed will naturally occupy much of your time, it’s important not to forget about the exterior. After all, this is what will help your she-shed blend in (or stand out) in the surrounding yard.

There are all sorts of ways to finish and decorate the exterior of your she-shed. You might opt for bright colors and fun decorations to make it a real statement piece in your yard. Or, you might choose more subdued colors and finishes to help it blend in a bit more. No matter what route you choose, be sure to factor in exterior design as you move forward with your she-shed plans.

In the second part of this series, we’ll go over some additional tips for designing and organizing she-sheds. For more on this, or to learn about any of our sheds, garages or other custom buildings for clients in SLC or nearby areas, speak to our team at A-Shed USA today.
